Last week, Mom spent a bunch of time putting raw chickeny stuff in plastic bags. Little did I know what her plans for it were.
Apparently, this is what I am suppose to eat from now on. Mom plopped a big ole meaty chicken breast in my bowl, and told me to eat. WHAT? Where's my kibble?
Don't get me wrong...I LOVE my raw bones, but aren't those just for special ocassions?
Seriously...I really am not sure what I am suppose to do with this piece of meat. Its not as crunchy as the bones I love, and its a little slimy.
Murphy's mom here. Yes, I have finally taken the plunge and switched Murphy over to a Raw Meaty Bone diet. He finished off the last of his kibble last night, so this morning was the first of many raw meals to come. I have done a LOT of reading on this, but I have to say I am still pretty nervous about it. I'm not crazy about him eating raw meat in the house, especially since he doesnt seem to want to keep it in his bowl when he eats. Plus, he's a growing Great Dane! He needs the correct nutrition to grow properly. Even though all my research tells me otherwise, I worry that he wont be getting the right amounts of vitamins and minerals with this diet.
I am starting him off on chicken. Whole breasts with the bone, and quarters. He'll stay on that for about 2 weeks, and then I'll start adding in different types of meats. Muscle meats, organs and bones. Beef, fish, lamb. Anything I can find that is cheap.
I decided to make this switch for many reasons. 1st, he has never done great on kibble. I have been buying him premium kibble since he was a pup, and he has always had stomach issues and loose stools. Plus, they are the smelliest poops I have ever encountered!! This last kibble he was on seems to be the best of them for him, but he still has issues. 2nd, he is super picky. He'll love the kibble for about a month...and then not want to eat it. Lastly, from all the research I've done, a raw meaty bone diet is the healthiest and most natural way of feeding dogs. They are carnivores. They are born to eat meat. They need to tear, and rip their food. Its good for their teeth, and for their overall health. Now I just need to convince Murphy of that!
He ate about 1/2 of the chicken breast/back this morning. He kept looking at me for reassurance. I kept telling him to eat. At one point he really started gnawing on the meat and I thought he finally got the concept...but I think the texture is weirding him out a bit. Its not crunchy like his kibble, or like his raw bones. After about 30 minutes of sniffing, licking and only a small amount of eating, I took the chicken away from him. I'll try again tonight, he should be good and hungry by then!
Darwin's a kibble girl, though we are usually giving her a raw meat snack (steak, chicken, ground beef, etc) at least a couple times a week (when we eat meat, she usually eats meat... she's so spoiled). My concern about a full raw diet would be all the freezer/refrigerator space it would require!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the switch! Hopefully Murphy soon realizes how much he loves raw meat!
You lucky boy to be on a raw food diet. Yummy chicken breasts! I bet you will get used to it soon and never want kibble again.
ReplyDeleteYour friend,
Niamh
it is NEVER easy getting the food right with a sensitive stomach breed. you have probably cleaned up your share of paddy cake accidents on the floor to know that sensitive tummies are no fun. many people will give your their opinions on the best way to feed your dog--take it with a grain of salt-- you have done your research--you know your dog better than anyone, so stick with your gut and hopefully the food will remain in his ;-)
ReplyDeleteit is great that you are finding the best way to feed him, keep it up and don't get discouraged--you may need to try something different yet again, so good luck!
Having a Giant breed dog with little published information available I've had to reference mostly Dane info. I've read alot on the raw meat diets and they sound great. I just havent been able to talk myself into trying it with our big boy. I look forward to seeing how Murphy likes it. I enjoy reading your blog and seeing how handsome Murphy is!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck on the new diet.
I wouldn't eat that either Murphy, unless a hooman cut it up for me. I'm super picky too and chicken gives me ketchup bottle butt!
ReplyDeleteRight now I eat TOTW pacific stream, I like it when the bag is new and don't like it towards the end when it is stale. Momma adds cheese and meats to it to spice it up a little for me. Momma says my breath is stinky and I've caught kitty sister eating some of my scrap kibble pieces.
Momma says she considered the raw diet for me but she's worried about doing it wrong and me not getting enough nutrition.
Good Luck with it Murphy, I know Honey eats Raw and has a lot of infor on her site about it.

Yay!! Sometimes it can take them a little while to make th switch. Heffner switched immediatly and really easily. Bess took a good couple of weeks before she would chow down on a leg quarter and really start digging into her meals.
ReplyDeleteYou are so brave! The Duchess keeps thinking about changing us to a raw diet, but she doesn't even know what a meaty bone is!!!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Emma Rose
you are a brave boy!
ReplyDeletehope he'll learn to enjoy it very soon (:
Thanks for stopping by Alice's blog, Murphy! I hope you adjust to your new yummy food soon!
ReplyDeleteWe have so wanted to switch the Herd, but it does take a lot of time to make sure you do it correctly. For now, we are keeping them on a high quality kibble. Some day.
ReplyDeleteNOMNOM! I hope you love your new meaty diet. We've been doing it for about 3 years and my ape says that you get over the weirdness of the meat and fear of the bugs over time (she hasn't eaten meat in about 20 years so it is extra weird for her!). We picked it up quickly but we had a foster who couldn't figure it out so she chopped it up for him. And my sissy had similar issues--loose, smelly stools (ew!) and she's much better on raw.

Hi again dude. Mom taught my bro and me to eat our meatiness on a big vinyl table cloth. We keep our feasts on that and if we try to run off with it, our meat is taken away. Believe me... we got the point REAL fast and now stick to the tablecloth on the floor to feast. It makes for easy clean up!
