The Ugly Dog Contest

Each year, San Diego holds its own "Ugly Dog Contest". Mom thought it would be fun to go since it was it was being held inside and it had been raining cats & dogs all day long, making it impossible for me to get to the park for a run.

It was an interesting afternoon to say the least. There were lots of doggies, and "Ugly Dog" wasn't the only category of contests being held.

Unfortunately, Mom got there too late to enter me into the "Most Unusual Markings" category, so instead she entered me into the "Most Handsome Adults Male Dog" category. There was a lot of stiff competition with over 50 dogs entered in that category. I'll tell you what the outcome was just a lil later in my blog.

First...here is the 3rd place winner of the "Ugly Dog" category. His name is Chomper, and Mom had to agree. He really does have a face only a mother could love! He was actually 1st place winner last year, but this year he got knocked down to 3rd place.

Apparently, when he was a puppy his whole litter had distemper and he was the only survivor. Mom isn't sure if that's what caused his teeth and mouth to be the way it is, but she's happy that he has a family that loves him just the way he is.

This year's winner for the "Ugly Dog" category, was a Chinese Crested named Rascal. Ya gotta admit...it was a pretty tough choice as to which one was actually the ugliest!

I then got to meet the dog who won for "Most Unusual Markings". Another Harlequin dane who Mom thinks actually is a chocolate Harlequin cuz his spots were almost the color of a Chocolate lab.

His name was Harly and I'm pretty sure I coulda beaten him in that category had Mom only left a bit earlier like I kept barkin at her to. I was happy that he won though, cuz we made friends really quickly. He was only a few months older than me and I really liked him!

I also got to meet a cute lil Basenji Pup named Snickers. He was SO tiny!!

Then I got all excited, cuz I thought this purty lil thing was my neighbor Quiche. Turned out I was wrong, but she was still a nice lil girl!

Another category was best costume. Here's a few of Mom's favorites.

and the first place winner of this category was a young Dracula and his bat! Pretty clever!

I gotta say though, I sure am glad they don't make costumes for us big doggies. Some of those dogs looked super hot and uncomfortable!

So, by now you are all probably wonderin how I did in the "Most Handsome Adult Male Dog" category.

Well...I took 3rd. 3rd!! Can you believe it!! I actually got beated out by a handsome Shepherd Mix named Teddy who took 2nd, and a really handsome (obviously...since he won!) Weimaraner who took 1st place.

Since I got voted 3rd place, I got this yellow prize basket.

I let Fergie help me open it. She sure seemed to like the crinkly plastic!

Once I opened it I was a little disappointed. Everything in it was made for "Toy" dogs! That meant most of the stuff was too small for me to play with, so Mom is sending it over to our favoritest neighbors who have smaller doggies. I think they'll like the toys a lot!

I do get to keep the bag of treats though, even though Mom say's they are 'junk'. She was laughin about the ingredients on the 'bacon' flavored treats.

"may contain trace amounts of fish & or chicken"

The main ingredient was whole wheat flower...and no where in the list of ingredients was 'bacon' even listed. Luckily, she likes to eat potato chips every once in a while, so she says I can have these every once in a while too.

The last thing in our prize packet was this ball cap. Of course Mom had to torture me by making me wear it. UGH! When will she stop??

All in all, a fun day. Mom says she's done with contests though...she'd rather let a smaller doggie win since the prizes are all for smaller doggies anyway. Plus, its more fun to just go and watch.

  3. Congrats Murphy on your winnings! I know what you mean about prizes, when I won ribbons in the pet show for big doggie and trickies I got to pick a prize from the tables. Momma had to get me leashes cause all the toys were too small, the collars were too small, the beds my head didn't even fit in, etc.

  4. So exciting! Congrats on being handsome. That sounds like alot of dogs to beat out. I feel like those Chinese Creasted dogs always have the ugly category locked.

  5. Oh, at first I thought you were late to enter all categories. Of course you should have entered the most handsome dog one. I just don't understand why you didn't get first. Did you perhaps bribe the wrong judge?
